There is an institution located in Reisterstown, Maryland called the Maryland Horse Library and Education Center. It houses more than 5,000 horse related volumes and also spouses many lectures and educational programs that are open to the public. You might find it unfortunate, but it is a reference library only and does not allow patrons to check out books. That is understandable in that it happens that books are not returned to lending libraries and many of the items in their particular collection are irreplaceable. I would suggest that, if you are researching a topic, that you should arrive with a plan of what sources you are looking for and use your cell phone to photograph pages, noting the source. I have also attended a couple of their lectures and found them very informative.
The library is located at 321 Reisterstown Road, in Reisterstown, Baltimore Co., Maryland in a former Methodist church building. The visitor entrance and an ample parking lot are located to the right of the building’s front. The front entrance that faces Reisterstown Road is locked and not used. Their hours of operation are 9-5 most week days, with a few holidays during which they are closed. There are a number of nice restaurants located in walking distance if you are making a day of it.
The center is not associated with any library system and was established by the Maryland Horse Industry Board in 2021. I found the staff helpful. The collection caters to of the wide variety of equine interests and not just horse racing and breeding, which is an extensive part of their collection, needless to say. The collection of 19th century works is extensive and interesting to browse.
