So, You Think You Love Horses?

Some Reflections on the Nature of Horses and Man

Glossary of Equestrian Terms

Most fields of human endeavor have evolved a specialized vocabulary. It might be a vocation such as medicine, or a recreation such as golf. A working knowledge of these vocabularies distinguishes the aficionado from the green horn. I will explain some of the more commonly used terms, but a complete list would be nearly impossible to construct. I am omitting many of the commonly understood terms. In compiling this glossary I must admit I am surprised just how rich and voluminous the equine lexicon is. In addition to a straight definition, I try to share my own experience with the topic.

Things that I hope to communicate to people who are inexperienced with horses and riding is that the horse-rider relationship is something very special, that effectively riding a horse is a complex but masterable skill set and that horses are intuitive and sentient beings. The ancient human-horse relationship is different than the human-dog relationship but is every bit as complex and rewarding. The lessons that you learn being a rider extend into many other aspects of your existence and will prove to be invaluable as you live your life. You can ask any rider and you will find that I am right.
